As is evident from the name, bandhej is a highly skilled and meticulous tie-and-die style of creating a fabric design (bandh= to tie), hence the name. Bandhej involves creating design patterns on a plain white fabric by creating small knots of thread on the fabric. Patterns and designs are created with these knots, and the knotted fabric is later dyed in a color of choice. Once dry, the knots are then opened up to reveal white, non-dyed fabric underneath, hence creating a contrast and revealing the pattern.The fabrics are dyed by hand and the main colors used are reds, blues, greens, yellows and black to get a sharp contrast against white.
